It started quietly, kids, donuts, piano keys, then spilled into vows beneath the trees at Zuanich Point Park and, finally, the roar of their pride wedding. Crystal (she/they) + Riley (they/them) pulled together a color-drenched celebration in just three weeks, choosing community, joy, and presence above all else.
We’re Alexis (she/her) + Katrina (she/her) of A+K Photography, a queer-owned wedding photography duo based in the Pacific Northwest, and we had the absolute honor of documenting Crystal + Riley’s vibrant, love-forward celebration.
Getting Ready: Laughter, Donuts, and All the Love
We met them at home where the morning felt like a warm hug, kids giggling between donut bites, piano keys being plunked with delight, and friends tag-teaming hair and makeup. Michelle from Auntie M’s Flowers wrapped Crystal’s bouquet with rainbow ribbons while Crystal’s pink hair and Riley’s blue hair set a playful, punchy tone. Their friend, Beeker, officiant and guitarist, reviewed final details as hugs and happy vibes floated from room to room.
Ceremony at Zuanich Point Park: Breeze, Water, and Vows
Under the trees at Zuanich Point Park, the ocean glimmered in the background. Papel picado and cempasúchil garlands, an ode to Riley’s Mexican roots, danced in the breeze, scattering lacey shadows across beloved faces. The morning sun was generous; the air felt bright and new. Beeker strummed guitar as they walked down the aisle, vows were tender and true, and community held them close.
The joyful roar after the “I do” was our favorite moment. Family and friends waved rainbow ribbon wands as Crystal + Riley walked back down the aisle, hand in hand, color streaming behind them like twin comets. Absolute pure magic.
We stayed beneath the trees for family photos, snuggly groupings, silly kid moments (Crystal’s kiddos were total stars), and a few quiet breaths to simply feel married.
Portraits by the Sea: First Moments as Mrs. + Mx.
We wandered the shoreline for portraits, salt air, gulls, and that soft summer shimmer on the water. Crystal’s funky white dress caught the light just right; Riley looked effortlessly dapper in a crisp white button-up, suspenders, and a blue bow tie. Between laughter and gentle pauses, they absorbed the hugeness of it all: just married, deeply seen, totally loved.
Pride Parade: Streets That Feel Like Home
Then we stepped into the heartbeat of Bellingham pride. The streets were a watercolor of flags and glitter; every corner pulsed with “you belong.” We found their people, wove through the crowd, and before long we were smack in the middle of the parade, cheers erupting as folks noticed the just-married glow. If joy had a sound, it was this. Watching a queer couple celebrated in public space felt like a love note to every kid lining the sidewalk.
Rumors Cabaret: A Quick Cheers
We made a celebratory pit stop at Rumors Cabaret for a quick shot, because obviously, and the energy followed us inside: clap-backs, bar-top laughter, and that fizzy, irreverent, Pride kind of love.
On Stage: First Dance to Janelle Monáe
Then the moment: Crystal + Riley took the Pride stage for their first dance to Janelle Monáe’s “Make Me Feel.” The crowd swayed and whooped; under sun and stage lights, they moved like they’d been dancing together forever; soft, flirty, and free.
We finished at Boundary Bay Brewery’s beer garden to hydrate and sign the marriage certificate, the quiet click of pens after the loudest, happiest chorus. No traditional venue needed; when you center community, the city becomes your celebration.
As we said our farewells and headed home, we kept thinking: more of this, please. If you’re dreaming up your own colorful, community-rooted day, quiet or loud, oceanside or city street, we’d be honored to photograph it with the same care and color. Head to our Experience page to learn more about how we show up, and our Portfolio is full of the joy we chase.
Meet Alexis + Katrina
Partners in life, photography, and way too many dad jokes. We connected online over our love of creativity, cats, and everything a little weird, and now we get to spend our days photographing love stories that feel just as real and honest as ours.
For us, photography isn’t about stiff poses or perfect timelines. It’s about connection, the way you laugh together, the quiet moments in between, and all the energy that makes your day yours. We want your photos to feel like you: vibrant, emotional, and full of life.
When we’re not photographing weddings, you’ll usually find us wrangling our three dogs (Koji, Pixel + Winnie), working on house projects, or trying to convince each other that ice cream counts as dinner.
