There’s something incredibly special about spring sunshine hitting just right on a day when dreams come true. On April 12, under clear blue skies, we had the absolute joy of documenting the grand opening of Hair by Mathea, a gorgeous new salon in downtown Sedro-Woolley, WA. Owned and operated by the wildly talented Mathea Emery, this space isn’t just a salon—it’s the radiant reflection of years of hard work, creativity, and heart.

At just 25, Mathea has already carved out a name for herself in the Skagit County beauty world, especially as a go-to bridal hair artist. Stepping inside her new studio, you’re immediately greeted with clean, modern elegance—and a massive “Hair by Mathea” wall installation that makes it clear: this is her dream realized. The space buzzed with excitement as friends, clients, and community members poured in to celebrate. The ribbon cutting, hosted by the local chamber of commerce, was full of cheers, hugs, and heartfelt tears as Mathea spoke about what this moment meant to her. It was impossible not to feel it too.

From the beautifully arranged charcuterie board (crafted by one of Mathea’s longtime clients), to floral bursts from Mount Baker Blooms, and cupcakes from Pure Bliss Desserts, every detail reflected the care and community behind this business. We kept our approach documentary-style to soak it all in—the laughter, the reunions, the warmth in every corner of the room. Mathea's family flew in for the occasion, standing proudly beside her, and our own puppy Winnie made a surprise cameo, happily sneaking into a few frames (as she often does during Katrina’s haircut appointments!).

Mathea is a powerful and consistent ally—uplifting, welcoming, and celebrating everyone who walks through her door. In spaces where representation matters deeply, she creates one where all identities are honored and seen.
